Making 280 homes across Wigan safer for local people
Working alongside Wigan Council, we delivered improvements to 280 properties across Atherton and Tyldesley to meet Awaab’s Law standards. Multi-trade teams completed damp and mould remediation, kitchen and bathroom replacements, roofing, window & door upgrades and landscaping works.
Emergency repairs, supporting residents into temporary accommodation and invasive plant removal were also undertaken. Despite challenging timeframes, we stayed in regular communication with residents helping to achieve a 100% customer satisfaction score.
- The brief : Connolly was appointed by Wigan Council to carry out damp, mould and disrepair works across 280 homes in the borough. The project focused on reducing the health risks associated with damp and mould, as well as repairing any structural damage.
- The challenge : The main challenge was adapting to a changing scope of works whilst sticking to the project schedule and continuing to offer excellent customer engagement. Some properties required a more invasive approach, with some residents needing to be moved into temporary accommodation.
- The solution : Connolly worked collaboratively with Wigan Council to identify emergency works and prioritise homes where residents were most at risk.

Connolly’s approach
We believe that everybody has the right to a safer, warmer and decent home, meeting the standards set out in legislation such as Awaab’s law.
Our team working alongside Wigan council was made up of joiners, electricians, plasterers, roofers, bricklayers, landscapers, painters, kitchen fitters, plumbers, window and door fitters, and damp and mould specialists. Internal and external works took place simultaneously to achieve an ambitious project end date.
We worked with our scaffolding partner Abstract Scaffolding and bricklaying partner Structures Group to make sure people’s homes were kept safe and accessible throughout the works. Our collaborative approach, clear communication with residents and accelerated delivery programme helped achieve 100% customer satisfaction across the project.
Moving residents into void properties and hotels where necessary, we also partnered with Helmrig Landscaping to remove invasive Himalayan Balsam plants and help families return to their homes as quickly as possible.
Social value
Creating pathways into work for young people in our local community
Through its partnership with Wigan Council, Connolly focused on creating employment and skills opportunities for students, young people and care leavers.
Our team donated their time and expertise to host careers events at local high schools and colleges. We’ve also offered work experience placements and apprenticeship pathways plus taken part in council-led support-into-work initiatives, generating excitement about careers in construction.
